OUR ORIGINS

Community Roots is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project based in Porthtowan, Cornwall.
We’ve turned an acre of bare land into a beautiful, productive, nature-friendly market garden producing delicious food for our local community.
Our aim is simple, to grow food and community in planet positive ways.

The garden is situated by the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Mount Pleasant Ecological Park.  We started our project in the spring of 2021 and the  transformation over the first 18 months, with the help of many volunteers, was phenomenal.

As well as producing low-impact, locally grown, healthy food for our community, we work with the community, offering volunteering and learning opportunities and hosting activities and events.

Our Vision for Community Roots is to be the change the world needs; modelling a sustainable way of connecting nature, community and food.

Everything we do at Roots fits within our core values:

  • Sustainability: valuing and respecting all of nature (including us!)

  • Kindness: treating all life with empathy and respect

  • Collaborative: learning, teaching and sharing

  • Courageous and innovative: challenging the status quo

  • Aspirational: to be the best we can be

  • Inclusive: valuing every part of everyone

Meet the Team

Community Roots was set up and is run by our directors, Antonia, Nicky, Matty and Manda.  All have experience growing food using nature friendly methods, along with a range of experience of working with people, project management, and environmental activism.

For all four of us, Community Roots fulfills long held dreams of enabling the community to learn and practice environmentally sustainable methods of food production, building community, reducing social isolation and reconnecting to nature and to the land.
